Some dos and don’ts for parents

Dos

  • Reassure them: Let them know that you are supportive of them and there to listen to them.
  • Listen to them: Let them express themselves freely without fear of being interrupted or judged. You may not agree with their choices but try to see things from their perspective.
  • Encourage conversation: Helping them to understand what a healthy relationship is and promoting these values can help as they form their own relationships.

Don'ts

  • Pressure them: Let them know that you are there for them, if they need to talk. Pushing them may make them less likely to open up to you.
  • Judge them: This may push them away and make them less likely to confide in you. Listen to them and try to see things from their perspective.
  • Blame them: They’re not to blame if they are in an unhealthy relationship. Instead, listen to them and reassure them that you will support them in their next steps.

Whilst this may not always be instantly noticeable, their behaviour may change over time – they could be anxious and may become withdrawn from other friends or family.
